Did You Know?

No amount of lead is safe

Even at low exposure, lead can harm brain development in children, leading to:
  • Lower IQ
  • Reading and learning disabilities
  • Shortened attention spans
  • Behavioral issues

Lead harms adults too

In adults, lead exposure raises the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and even premature death. During pregnancy, it’s a major risk factor for preeclampsia.

Replacing lead pipes creates job opportunities

Lead pipe replacement creates immediate opportunities, especially for plumbers and contractors. Creating a pipeline of shovel-ready projects strengthens the local workforce and provides steady employment.

9 million lead pipes are still in use

Millions of homes still get water through toxic lead pipes. Replacing them is essential for safe drinking water.

There’s a federal 10-year mandate to replace lead pipes

The US EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements require all lead pipes to be replaced within a decade.

Replacing lead pipes means modernizing water infrastructure

Aging lead pipes are prone to leaks and breaks. Replacing them ensures long-term reliability, reliable revenue for utilities to make crucial investments in infrastructure, and safer drinking water for communities.

Milwaukee is one of the few cities in the country with a prioritization plan to ensure neighborhoods likely to suffer the most severe impacts from lead poisoning get their pipes replaced first. In consultation with a community-based group, Coalition for Lead Emergency (COLE), and following a public engagement process, Milwaukee included in an ordinance three indicators to prioritize where LSLs will be removed first:

  1. The area deprivation index (ADI), which is a compilation of social determinants of health
  2. The percentage of children found to have elevated lead levels in their blood when tested for lead poisoning
  3. The density of lead service lines in the neighborhood.
